Perfect Match

This river exists mostly in my imagination, and is a mixture of places I've been in Arkansas, Ohio and Colorado. The fun part of this painting, however, wasn't the river, but the foreground. The furnishings are arranged and designed to be as mismatched as I could get them, to make the piece appear haphazard and unique. -- BTK

West Winds

When I was a boy, our family would vacation in cabins like this, which we would rent for a week or two in places in Michigan. Storms would come in from the north or south, but the gentle breezes which refreshed the spirit always came in from the west. This scene could be a lot of places, of course. What I wanted to capture here was the sense of comfort these old, tested buildings retained and passed on from one occupant to another. There are feelings of serenity pressed into the wood itself. Limited edition of 300 prints. -- BTK

Toasting Zeb

I get a particular chuckle out of the concept of "discovery", and naming places that have been around for millions of years, and explored for centuries by native peoples, after the first white person to see them.

This impressive find is Pike's Peak, named after Lieutenant Zebulon Pike who first came upon it in the wilderness that was to become Colorado, in 1806.

I love the shape of it. Seen from the North, as it is here, the morning light is often spectacular.

The Dunes

South Padre Island, Texas. Though I've seen other coastal areas with similar dunes, this one is special to me. I've spent a lot of time there with friends in between art shows, and it has inspired quite a few paintings. There's a special feeling to the beach, the place where land meets sea, and human domination ends. We come and go freely upon the land, but we will always be but visitors to the sea.

I'm particularly enchanted by the many moods of the sky.

Upon Reflection

I love Robert Frost. I've been searching for years for just the right feeling in a still life that would work with my favorite collection. One evening, while I was planning designs for my drapery series, a Robert Frost poem ambled through my mind, and the idea for this composition resulted.

As far as I know, Robert Frost never devoted a poem strictly to reflections on water. But if he had, perhaps it would have been inspired by a scene like this. -- BTK
