Extra Room

A fantasy, I suppose, but I've been in old houses like this in historic Colorado, and this painting is not as far removed from reality as one might think. Before development, before condos and superhighways, they were part of the American landscape. They still exist, on some old ranches and farms. They were built to last, then added onto as families grew, and extra room was needed.

Three of a Kind

No two aspen trees are really alike.  Each one has a unique shape, and a special way of capturing light.  So even though  Capitol Peak, here in the background, is a prominent Colorado peak, I chose this stand of aspen to be the focus of my Rocky Mountain landscape.

West Winds

When I was a boy, our family would vacation in cabins like this, which we would rent for a week or two in places in Michigan. Even though the landscape in the background was inspired by my hikes in Colorado and Western mountains, my first country
experiences were in the Midwest.
What I wanted to capture here was the sense of comfort these tested old houses retained and passed on from one occupant to another.

Hard Winter

Hard Winter

By the time flowers are blooming in the Rocky Mountains, it's mid-July and only a few stubborn glaciers remain.  But if the winters are extra long and hard, the snow fields can remain into August, like in this creation of Cirque Mountain, in the Sneffels Range of Southwestern Colorado.

Toasting Zeb

This impressive find is Pike's Peak, named after Lieutenant Zebulon Pike who first came upon it in the Western landscape that was to become Colorado, in 1806.

The old house interior is, of course, a creation, but the feeling of light it captures is both realistic, and fantasy.

Classics

I took a photograph of this stream on a hiking trip in the Wind River Wilderness Area in Wyoming. The incredible rush of crystal clear water that a few hours ago was still snow is a Rocky Mountain classic. When I began creating the interior of the mountain house in this painting, the idea of putting other American classics in the scene stayed with me. "Leaves of Grass" by Walt Whitman and "The Way West" by A. B. Guthrie were simply two of the many possibilities that felt comfortable here. --

Ouray Mountain

We frequently name places in the West after the Native Americans who lived there.  Ouray Mountain is no exception.  It towers over the town of Ouray, one of Colorado's numerous old towns which began as a mining town, and is now a popular tourist destination.

Threesome

I absolutely love the way aspen trees capture the light.

I have dozens of photos I use as reference images to capture in my paintings, and I never tire of seeking out more.

Bed n' Breakfast #3

Even in the Rocky Mountain wilderness, it pays to leave the beaten path. I've been hiking in the country since my childhood, and it's still a surprise to come upon nature's hidden treasures, like these deer beds, which I've created from more memories than I can count.  It's why I love realistic art - you can't capture images like this any other way.

Disappearing Act

One of the things I love about the Western landscape is the abrupt ebb and flow of nature. Unexpected vistas suddenly appear and disappear. Canyons, waterfalls, and meadows come and go, as do the many springs and streams. I am constantly surprised and delighted by the land, and thrilled by our American heritage.

The Secret

Because her favorite color was teal, she wore the delicate necklace often. It was a gift she bought for herself. No one but she knew the beads spelled "I love you" in Morse code. We had been together for almost six years before she told me. I wish I'd thought of it myself. It would be perfect in a painting.

Ivy League

I have always loved the names of Western landmarks - the Snake River, the Flat Top Mountains, the Frying Pan River, and the Bitterroots, all named by frontier people, and they add much to the romance of the West. Equally intriguing is the Collegiate Peaks Range, part of which I've captured here. It lies north of Monarch Pass, and east of Leadville, and include in it's honor roll Mt. Princeton (here on the left) and it's neighbo
r, Mt. Yale.
