Pier Group Next to nature, I love old, time-worn woodwork the best.
The realistic painting techniques I use to capture the rustic feeling of
great old houses, combined with Midwestern lakeshores and lakes, are
for me a successful blending of natural places and man made
environments.

Perfect Match
This river exists mostly in my imagination, and is a mixture of
places I've been in the Midwest and Colorado. It's pure
Midwestern America. The fun part of this realistic painting,
however, wasn't the river, but the old house in the foreground. The furnishings are
arranged and designed to be as mismatched as I could get them, to
make the piece appear haphazard and unique.

Upon Reflection
I love Robert Frost. I've been searching for years for just the right
feeling in a still life that would work with my favorite collection.
His poetry is uniquely
Midwestern America, as is the
lakeshore setting in this realistic painting.

Grandpa
Like
most of my realistic paintings featuring old house interiors ,
this too is an imaginary place, a composite of things I've seen
or been shown by people who loved them. The magnificent old spruce
which inspired this Midwestern painting, however, is real. It resides by a
stream in the Boundary Waters where it has thrived for generations,
adding countless offspring to the cycle of life there.

Oil
Lamps
The partial
painting on the left wall of this old house was the inspiration for this classic
Americana theme. It's closely copied from part of an Andrew Wyeth painting
titled "Oil Lamp". In fact, the realistic painting
techniques I employ allowed me to make such a good copy of it that
I had to go back in and destroy some of my work, to avoid copyright
issues.
