The Egg Tempera Advantage

Though egg tempera is one of the most time honored techniques in painting ever established, few artists practice it today, and fewer schools even teach it, preferring to concentrate their studies on more contemporary forms of art. For realism, however, no other paint can deliver the incredible delicacy or sharp, clean imagery of egg tempera. Sunlit Western landscapes, ocean seascapes, and delicate still life's are rendered with equal confidence once you learn and practice the techniques that I teach. My workshops are designed to eliminate the mysteries of how to create and handle this unique paint. Whether you are a first year art student or an experienced artist looking for a new medium, I guarantee you will come away from my classes with fresh knowledge, and tools you can apply to this or any painting you pursue in the future.

About the Classes

Workshops will be held in the Abend Gallery, with a Friday morning orientation (a short lecture which I will keep as entertaining as possible), describing the paint and how it works.  This will be followed by a  personal demonstration of applying and working the paint, after which students will begin working on paintings of their own.

Techniques such as layering through numerous glazes, stippling, scraping, fashioning brushes to your personal needs, and masking, are good examples of some of the concepts students will be learning.

I will be demonstrating throughout the class, as well as moving around to individual students and consulting whenever needed.  Students are invited to interrupt my demonstrations with questions about any aspect of the art they wish, from basic technique, to questions about design and composition of their work.

With the exception of brushes and items listed on the itinerary below, I will be providing most of the materials needed.

Painting Workshops

Schedule

As I show my work in art shows and exhibits around the Country from April through September, my time at home to host the workshops is, of necessity, limited.

My next workshop will be this Fall, on October 22, 23, & 24, and will be held in the facility at the Abend Gallery, located on 2260 E. Colfax just east of downtown Denver.

If you are interested in attending a workshop, or wish to know more about them, please contact me through my email at btkeller@qwest.net, or enter your own contact information in the form in this website, and I will be very happy to include you in my list of potential students.

Costs and Cancellation Policy

Each class costs $295, plus a thirty dollar charge for materials and supplies (see the section above for what I provide).  Classes will accept a maximum of 20 students, and as long as there is room you can be accepted up to a week before class starts.  However, late comers entering the class less than 30 days before it begins must pay the full $325 fee up front, with no possibility of a refund.

For earlier registrants, $100 down secures you a place in the workshop, with the remainder due 30 days before class starts.  You may also cancel with a $100 refund up to the same 30 day deadline, after which commitment is assumed, and no refunds will be given, though the remaining fee is waived.

If I am forced to cancel for any reason (illness, injury, weather, etc.) classes will be rescheduled as soon as I am able, and you will be given full credit for the money you have committed, to be applied at a later date.
